Republican Bruce Rauner spent his first full day as Illinois' governor at the Statehouse, where his agenda included leading a meeting with the General Assembly's four legislative leaders.
Rauner also practiced his role in Wednesday’s General Assembly inauguration. Rauner will oversee the election of the Senate President. That's largely a formality. Democrats have already chosen John Cullerton to remain their leader.
In going over the script, Rauner says he chose to do away with another tradition:
"I saw for the first time that they were going to refer to me as "His Excellency, the Governor.' And I specifically asked that they never refer to me in that way.”
Rauner, who used his personal fortune to help win the governor's office, has tried to portray himself as an average guy.
