Secretary of State warning businesses of filing scam

Illinois businesses do have to file annual paperwork with the state, but not necessarily the kind companies may be being hit up for now. Secretary of State Jesse White says a solicitation going out to companies looks fishily similar to Illinois' annual report form. Only this one is being sent by the firm, Annual Business Services, not the state.

The solicitation is an offer, for a $125 fee, to fill out companies' "corporate minutes" which it says has to be turned in by Jan. 9. But companies don't have to file annual minutes in Illinois. White is sending a warning to businesses, to be on alert.

The annual report Illinois does require corporations submit, with a fee, has no strict deadline; there's a rolling one, based on when a company originally filed. That form asks for information like the names and contact information of the president and directors, the number of shares issued, and property values.
