Higher speed limit for trucks on Illinois highways

Trucks will be able to go the same speed as cars on urban interstate highways, now that the General Assembly has nixed a veto by Governor Pat Quinn.

In August, Quinn rejected a plan that would increase the speed limit from 55 to 60 miles per hour.  He says trucks traveling at high speeds have caused more accidents.

Representative Monique Davis, a Chicago Democrat, argued that legislators should stick with Quinn.

"I don't know about you, but when I travel I don't want that 18 wheeler on my back going at the same speed I'm going."

Instead, the House followed the Senate's leader, and easily overrode Quinn's veto.  The higher speed limit will apply in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will counties.
