Some Illinois races still too close to call

Peoria Public Radio

Tuesday was the deadline for local election authorities to have all ballots counted, but it will still be weeks before the totals are finalized and before all of the winners' of the November fourth election are announced.

Weeks after the election, there are still unknowns. The race for Illinois Treasurer is too close to call. There's an Illinois House race that could come down to the final ballot. And what's the breakdown for Illinois Supreme Court Justice Lloyd Karmeier's fight to retain his spot on the bench?

With electronic voting, it may seem like the process should be quick. But State Board of Elections Director Rupert Borgsmiller says authorities have been dealing with absentee, and provisional ballots.

"Because if it was provisionally, and the ballot was questioned, the clerk had to notify those individuals, they could come into the clerk's office within a certain amount of time, and verify that they are who they say they are.”

Time's up for counting. But then clerks have until next Tues., Nov. 25, to get that information to the state. Still, no official winners will be declared.

The board of elections will certify and make public all results Sun., Nov. 30.
