A crowd filled the state capitol rotunda in Springfield Tuesday afternoon in support of a measure that would shift additional state funding to poorer school districts.
The legislation has stalled in the Illinois House after passing the Senate in the spring. The sponsor, Macoupin County Democratic Senator Andy Manar, says it faces opposition from more prosperous districts. Those schools would lose money under the change.
"But surely we can agree, regardless of where we live or where we come from, that a quality education for every child makes our entire state a better place to live. That's what SB 16 is all about."
A hearing took place Tuesday afternoon on the measure.
Despite the activity on the eve of the fall veto session getting underway, the proposal is not expected to advance in the next few weeks. More debate is likely in the spring.
