Grace period allows same day registration and voting

Election Day is next Tuesday. But there’s a chance there will not be a clear cut winner right away in some Illinois races. The month prior to the election, Illinois offers grace period registration for anyone needing to register or update their address.
Typically it ends the Saturday before Election Day. But this year only, the law allows voters to register and vote up until and on Election Day.

McDonough County Clerk Gretchen DeJaynes says ballots cast during the grace period are provisional and will not be counted until 14 days after the election.

“If this potentially ends up being a lot of voters, it very possibly could impact whether a race is called on Election Day or whether a race is called on Election Day or whether they have to wait 2 weeks later.”

Those wanting to take advantage of grace period registration must register and vote during the same visit. DeJaynes says voters can register at all early voting sites.
