Rauner calls bid system for marijuana license corrupt

The Republican candidate for Illinois governor says he would have vetoed the legalization of medical marijuana.

Bruce Rauner is criticizing how companies put in bids for the very few licenses that allow them to grow or distribute medical marijuana in the state. Rauner says the state government is awarding the licenses in a secretive way.

“Something stinks and it’s not the marijuana. This process is so overtly corrupt, so indefensible, it would make Rod Blagojevich blush.”

Instead, Rauner wants open auctions so licenses to grow and distribute marijuana would go to the highest bidders.

A spokesman for Democratic Governor Pat Quinn’s office says the new law is set up so those who are awarding companies with the licenses to grow marijuana won’t know who’s behind the bid. Ten Republicans supported the medical marijuana law.
