More police will be out on Illinois roads this Labor Day weekend looking to spot drunk drivers and seatbelt scofflaws. That's thanks to a new push by law enforcement and the Illinois Department of Transportation.
Shannon Alderman is IDOT's alcohol program coordinator. He says the latest figures available show that impaired driving deaths are on the rise in Illinois.
"Unfortunately we're talking about over 900 people dying on Illinois roads each year, one-third of those, around 300, involve a drunk driver. Those are preventable deaths."
There is good news. Alderman says seat belt use is up from last year.
