Republican Bruce Rauner says Governor Pat Quinn needs to come clean on the anti-violence program that's a target of a federal probe.
Rauner -- who is challenging Quinn for the governor's office -- made the remarks at an appearance in Springfield today
The Neighborhood Recovery Initiative was rolled out just before Quinn's last campaign for governor, four years ago. But it's in the news now, because of an audit and a slew of media reports that say it was mismanaged.
And maybe worse -- federal prosecutors are apparently investigating it. They've asked a bipartisan legislative commission to hold off calling a handful of key players who used to work in the Quinn administration to testify about it.
Rauner says lawmakers should go ahead with their plans, he says they can work in parallel with the feds.
But he says Gov. Quinn holds the key to real answers about what all went on.
"The core issue is that Gov. Quinn has been hiding and avoiding. And the best what to deal with this is for him to come forward."
At the same time, Rauner's campaign has said the wealthy businessman had "no idea" about donations one of his companies made to Democrats after receiving a lucrative Cook County contract. The legislative hearing is scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday of next week.
