Sexual assault ignored in many universities

A survey of more than 400 colleges and universities finds many are not providing adequate sexual assault response training for faculty, staff and students.

U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill released the results Wednesday. They also show 41 percent of responding institutions have not conducted any sexual assault investigations in five years.
She also says the survey indicates many schools allow students to adjudicate cases and some athletic departments to oversee cases involving athletes.

“It is hard to imagine a victim that would be willing to come forward if they knew that the athletic department is going to be making all of the decisions in the cases when the alleged perpetrator is in fact a scholarship athlete within that athletic department.”

The Missouri Democrat hopes the survey results will provide a “roadmap” for legislation that is expected later this summer.
