Americans hit the road for 4th of July weekend

If you’re hitting the road this long weekend, you’re not alone. 41 million Americans are expected to go somewhere for the 4th of July.

Most people are projected to travel at least 50 miles from their homes. And this year the number of folks heading somewhere for independence day is up nearly 2 percent.

Charlene Sligting is with AAA Chicago. She says to expect busy roadways this weekend as more than 2 million Illinois residents jump in their cars.

“We just would like to remind people there will be a lot of travelers on the road and to leave their phones with passengers. And everyone here in Illinois needs to be buckled up in their seatbelt, it’s the law.

Sligting says the majority of people traveling, are doing so by car despite higher gas prices because consumer confidence levels are up.

Air travel is also expected to be more popular this weekend compared to previous years.
