July 4th weekend expected to draw many travelers

More than 41 million Americans are expected to travel this Independence day weekend and lots of Illinois residents will be hitting the road. IPR's MariamSobh reports.
At least 2 million people from across the state are expected to travel by car. Charlene Sligting is with AAA Chicago. She says this year is the most active 4th of July since 2007.

“What we’re seeing is that the economy has turned around and people are now traveling because of improvements in the economy and it’s increase on consumer confidence and their spending. ”

Sligting says more travelers are heading out on destinations at least 50 miles away. And it’s not just cars on the road.

The number of Illinois residents choosing to fly is up 2 percent from last year.
