All Illinois schools will have to create and implement anti-bullying policies, under a new law signed by the governor Thursday at a Chicago school.
The measure's sponsor, Chicago Democratic Representative Kelly Cassidy, says it took several years to pass. She says during that time, she heard heartbreaking stories from parents whose children were bullied and who felt schools were not receptive.
"And so I am so grateful for the parents who stood up for their kids, who took the brave step of standing up to school leadership and school boards, and really just continued to fight until their kids were safe."
Under the law, schools must set procedures for reporting bullying and for parental notification. The policies should also include the investigation of reports of bullying and actions that may be taken to address it.
