FEMA again extends deadline for flood victims to register for assistance

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has extended the deadline that individuals affected by extreme flooding can apply for assistance. Today was supposed to be the final day. IPR'S Amanda Vinicky reports.

FEMA again extends deadline for flood victims to register for assistance

Businesses and people affected by this spring's storms and flooding now have until August 8 to register. FEMA says it extended the deadline another 15 days because it wants to make sure sure all people affected are able to apply for disaster assistance.

The individual assistance is available to residents of 35 Illinois counties impacted by the flash and river flooding from April 16 to May 5. It was bad enough that President Barack Obama issued a disaster declaration.

The recovery money's to help pay for temporary housing, home repairs and other disaster-related expenses. The application's at disasterassistance.gov.

FEMA did not indicate it was giving the state, local governments and certain non-profit groups extra time to submit paperwork.  Forty Illinois counties are eligible for public assistance to help cover costs of debris removal and to help repair damaged public facilities.

Peoria, Tazewell and Woordford counties are among those eligible for assistance.
