Peoria's Madison Theater included on list of endangered buildings

Ten old hotels, homes, and bridges all built at different times in Illinois' history.  The structures might be different, but for 2013, they have something in common. IPR’s Chris Slaby reports.
The sites span from the state's northern border to Madison County, outside St. Louis. They make up this year's "Ten Most Endangered Historic Places" list released by Landmarks Illinois, a state organization that promotes preserving sites.

Bonnie McDonald: "This is not our only hammer, so to speak, but however, we focus this list as a way to draw attention on these particular ten properties."

McDonald is president of Landmarks Illinois. She says while the locations listed are most in need of financial and other help.

"They are also indicative of thousands of other properties around the state that need public support, that need local assistance, and are suffering from some kind of challenge," McDonald says.

Some are threatened by development.  Others are run-down. McDonald says over the years, four in five buildings named to each year's list have been spared.
