On this week’s Out and About, Dr. Mae Gilliland Wright of ArtsPartners of Central Illinois talks with Jerry Kolb and artist Preston Jackson about the Peoria Heights Earth Day Garden Celebration, taking place this Saturday, April 22 at the Peoria Heights Public Library.

The celebration will recognize the recently installed Preston Jackson sculpture “Shirley Armstrong” and its powerful ecological message. The sculpture, which is a large sperm whale, was created in honor of Jackson’s mother, whose strong beliefs regarding conservation made her a woman ahead of her time.

The day will also feature live music, art projects for children, complimentary Trefzger’s cookies and more. There is no cost to attend; the event will take place at 816 E Glen Ave., Peoria Heights, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Jody Holtz is WCBU's assistant program and development director, All Things Considered host, as well as the producer of WCBU’s arts and culture podcast Out and About.
