Religious Jews In Israel I
In the first part of a profile of Israeli voters, Robert Siegel speaks to a religious family about next week's elections. This family is in the minority among Orthodox Jews because they support the peace process. Although many religious Jews support Likud candidate Benjamin Netanyahu, the Meverach family claims that he lacks an ideology.
Liberia
The ceasefire in Liberia that has kept warring factions peaceful for almost two weeks has been broken. U.S. Marines today killed three Liberians near the American Embassy compound in Monrovia and wounded a fourth. The men were shot after fighting broke out in the capital. An American soldier was slightly wounded in today's fighting. Noah Adams talks with NPR's Jennifer Ludden who's in the Liberian capital of Monrovia.
Dick & Jane
NPR's Cheryl Corley reports from Chicago on an exhibit of old Dick and Jane books. Dick, Jane, their loyal dog Spot, and other characters were the backbone of reading primers widely used in American schools through the sixties.
Republican Meeting
NPR's John Nielsen reports on a Republican convention being held in Washington, D.C. this weekend. A large number of Republican State Chairmen and party advisors are meeting with national leaders to organize attacks on President Clinton and other Democrats before the Republican convention in San Diego.
New Tv
Linda talks with Amy Paulsen, the deputy editor of TV Guide, and Ken Tucker, the television critic for Entertainment Weekly, about the new television shows being prepared for the upcoming fall season. Many producers are trying to duplicate the success of the cult hit "The X-Files," and as a result, more science fiction fare will be hitting the airwaves next season.
Asthma In Bronx
NPR's Melissa Block reports that the South Bronx has one of the country's highest asthma rates: estimated as high as 8 times the national average. At some public schools, the problem is especially acute; one principal at a school near an incinerator says that half of her students suffer from asthma. Many of these schools are close to the industrial plants that some have accused of exacerbating asthma. But heavy industry is encouraged in this region, and company officials say there's no proof they're part of the problem.
Lynn Neary Investigates The Chemistry Of Insects.
While using chemicals to get rid of bugs is a multi-million dollar business, Neary visits with a scientist who studies insect-produced chemicals that could be useful to us.
Israel Election News
NPR's Eric Weiner reports that unofficial results of the Israeli elections show Likud Party leader Benjamin Netanyahu as the winner. Official results will be announced next week, but it now appears certain that Labor leader Shimon Peres has lost his bid to remain Prime Minister and pursue his plan for peace with Arab states.
. Value?
Jackie Kennedy Onnasis' estate has been drawing top dollars all week long at Sotheby's auction house. Noah Adams talks with Michael Marsden, dean of the College of Arts and Science at Northern Michigan University in Marquette who has written about popular culture, about this estate sale. Marsden says he's not surprised by the amount of money people have paid for Jackie O's belongings being auctioned. Rather, Marsden says, people attach a kind of profound value to memorabilia that can be very high. He says this dates back to the Middle Ages when people begin to collect the relics of saints.
Mangos, Bananas, And Coconuts
Alan Cheuse reviews Mangos, Bananas, and Coconuts by Himilse (ee-MEEL-say) Novas (NOH-vass). It's about miracles, magic and the Cuban culture, with a satirical twist. The premise ...fraternal twins separted at birth are destined to reunited later in life. The Publisher is Arte Publico.
