Modern Art as Torture
Host Lynn Neary talks with art historian Victoria Combalia about the use of modern art as torture during Spain's civil war 65 years ago. Combalia says the work of artists such as Kandinsky, Klee and Dali was the inspiration for secret cells and torture centers built in Barcelona. She says the torture cells, built in 1938, used geometric abstraction and surrealism to influence and affect prisoners. The torture centers were the creation of French anarchist Alphonse Laurencic.

New York Social Expenses
Linda talks to Joe Califano, chairman and president of the Center on Addiciton and Substance Abuse at Columbia University. They discuss a study conducted by the center that looked at the way substance abuse effects New York City's health, legal and criminal justice systems, its business and economy, and social services. It found that substance abuse and addiction cost New York City more than $20 billion during 1994 and that 21 cents of every dollar in taxes paid by New Yorkers goes to pay for the consequences of substance abuse.
Poll: Concern about Iraq Growing Among Americans
A new poll by the Pew Research Center for the People and the Press finds that Americans have become more aware of the problems facing U.S. troops in Iraq, but continue to support the U.S. mission there. Only 23 percent of the 1,200 people polled said the operation in Iraq is going "very well," down from 61 percent in April. Hear Andrew Kohut of the Pew Research Center.
