Atmospheric horror and local lore collide in 'Darkness Calls'

On this episode of Out and About, Dr. Mae Gilliland of ArtsPartners of Central Illinois speaks with local author, human rights activist and educator Joe Chianakas about his upcoming horror novel Darkness Calls, set for release on March 4. Inspired by his childhood adventures in Peoria’s Springdale Cemetery, the story blends atmospheric horror with local lore.

Joe talks about the diverse cast of characters who, despite feeling like outsiders, find strength in their differences. He shares how the novel explores themes of belonging and identity, emphasizing that it’s their connection as outsiders that ultimately saves them. Darkness Calls is a deeply emotional narrative that explores life, death and the magic hidden in our world.
