Questions Remain As Morton Names New Police Chief

Morton village
Morton, IL Village Government
The Morton Village Board Monday night named a new police chief.

Morton has a new police chief, but the circumstances surrounding the retirement of outgoing Chief Craig Hilliard remain hazy.
In a brief special meeting Monday evening, the Morton Village Board promoted Deputy Chief Jason Miller, effective July 1.

Hilliard is on vacation until his retirement takes effect.

In a statement last week, the village board thanked Hilliard for his 37 years of service and wished him well, but has declined to comment further. A retirement letter from Hilliard to Village President Jeff Kaufman dated June 18 was released with the statement.

Questions arose after Hilliard's photo and biography were quietly scrubbed from the village website earlier this month.
WCBU has filed a Freedom of Information Act request with the village.
