Demolition of Sheridan Village Bergner's Begins

Demolition of the former Bergner's at Sheridan Village has begun, marking the end of the iconic Central Peoria department store building.

Bergner's stores closed in 2018 after corporate parent Bon-Ton Stores declared bankruptcy. The Sheridan Village store has sat vacant since.

The space's owners applied for a demolition permit last fall. Crews began tearing down the front of the building on Wednesday.

Bergner's was founded in Peoria more than 130 years ago. The Sheridan Village store was built in the late 1950s.
