Suburban Chicago Priest In Line To Helm Diocese of Peoria

Catholic Diocese of Peoria

A suburban Chicago priest is in line to succeed Bishop Daniel Jenky as the leader of the Catholic Diocese of Peoria in about two years.

Pope Francis named Rev. Louis Tylka the new co-adjutor bishop of the Peoria diocese on Monday. Tylka, 49, is currently pastor of St. Julie Billiart in Tinley Park.

Jenky said he petitioned the Vatican to appoint a coadjutor bishop to help administer the diocese more than a year ago, as he suffers from growing mobility problems linked to arthritis and spinal issues.

Tylka will automatically become bishop of the Peoria diocese upon Jenky's retirement. Catholic doctrine requires bishops to retire at age 75. Jenky turns 75 in March 2022.
