Caterpillar Implements "Indefinite Layoffs" at Building KK

Caterpillar is "indefinitely" laying off an unspecified number of employees at its East Peoria Building KK plant.

Caterpillar is classified as an essential employer during Gov. J.B. Pritzker's stay-at-home order.

"While our operations have been classified as essential activity, the COVID-19 pandemic is having an impact on global economic conditions," Caterpillar spokeswoman Kate Kenny said. "We are taking a variety of actions at our global facilities to reduce production due to weaker customer demand, potential supply constraints and the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and related government actions."

The company also announced a temporary closure of its Mapleton foundry last week.
