A new apartment complex in downtown Peoria will be catered towards tackling local housing insecurity.

Phoenix Community Development Services announced Tuesday construction plans for a new four-story, 24-unit apartment building at the site of the old Regions bank branch on NE Madison.

The construction is funded by a $5.5 million grant from the Illinois Housing Development Authority.

The first floor will feature commercial space.

Officials at Phoenix Community Development Services hope to break ground this fall. The non-profit currently operates 159 units those without stable housing in Peoria.
