Children's Home CEO Matt George Pens New Book on Running a Nonprofit

The CEO of Peoria's Children's Home says it's important for non-profits to think like businesses, not charities.

Matt George wrote a new book..."The Nonprofit Game Plan: The Proven Strategy to Nonprofit Success."

George said just like for-profit businesses, non-profits need money to avoid cutting back on services. But he said there is important distinction.

"The difference in a for-profit is you may lose revenue or investors are not happy or the stock goes down. What happens in a not-for-profit, is it could mean life or death," he said.

George says non-profits are the best line of defense against homelessness, adding to prison populations, and other issues.

The CEO of the Children's Home of Illinois is releasing a book on how to run a successful nonprofit....called Non Profit Game Plan. Matt George says Kevin Harrington of the TV show Shark Tank mentored him.

He met Harrington at a conference. George says their relationship began when he just asked for guidance. He said that's the best way to gain a mentor.

"Everyone can do it. You can do it. Ask somebody in the community. Ask somebody who's a leader to where you look up to that you want to become a better businessman or woman and lead," he said. "That's the fun part of it."

Children's Home is Peoria's 12th largest employer.
