Sheen's Beatification Placed on Hold

archbishopfultonsheen.com

The beatification of Archbishop Fulton Sheen is on hold at the request of some members of the Bishop's Conference.

Pope Francis called for Sheen's beatification last month. However, that's now postponed indefinitely. It's unclear why some bishops requested the delay, but a letter sent by the Diocese of Peoria to media argues his life has been "meticulously investigated," and said he was an "exemplary model of Christian conduct."

The diocese also noted Sheen was never accused of misconduct involving a minor.

In a statement, Bishop Daniel Jenky said he is deeply saddened by the delay, but still confident Sheen will be beatified eventually.

Sheen, an early televangelist born in Woodford County, was set to be beatified on December 21 in Peoria.

Beatificiation is the first step towards declaring someone a saint in the Catholic Church.
