U.S. Rep. Cheri Bustos (D-Moline) said she’s tackling the recent problems at the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee she chairs with eyes open.
“I don’t know anything better a leader can do than to recognize there’s an issue, and dive right in and fix it, and that’s what I’m doing," she said.
Several staffers resigned Monday after criticism from the Congressional Black and Latino caucuses over a lack of diversity in the DCCC’s leadership ranks and shortfalls with Latino voter outreach efforts.
Bustos said she will work to address those concerns as she looks to hold and strengthen the Democrats’ House majority in 2020.
“I am mission focused. I’m making sure that we do a good job between now and next November, and then when next November, November of 2020 comes, that we’re doing well at the polls, as well," she said.
Bustos said she recognizes there’s an issue and she’s working to fix it. The comments came during a Wednesday appearance in Peoria, her first media availability since events unfolded in Washington, D.C. over the weekend.
Bustos canceled appearances on Monday and Tuesday across her district to head back to the capitol to defuse the escalating situation at the DCCC.
