Peoria Council Discusses Marijuana Legalization

Illinois prohibited recreational use of marijuana in 1931. The state will reverse course next January as recreational marijuana will be legal.

Peoria City Council member Rita Ali wants the city to take a two-pronged approach on how it will handle the new legislation.

"It brings about both opportunity and it brings about, for some, anxiety. So I think we need a plan with regard to law enforcement and I think we need a plan as it relates to opportunity, economic opportunity," said Ali.

City manager Patrick Urich told the council he expects to provide guidance on both issues in about a month. Illinois will become the 11th state to authorize the recreational use of marijuana.
