Water Levels Falling, But Debris Still Poses Hazard For Boaters

Peoria Public Radio/Kristin McHugh

EAST PEORIA -- Debris in the Illinois River presents potentially dangerous scenarios for boaters this weekend.

“There is still an incredible amount of debris floating in the water and just under the waterway. So we would recommend using extreme caution when operating the watercraft," said Chief Mike Johnson and the Fon du Lac Park District Police Department.

Johnson said even with a spotter looking for debris, life jackets should be worn at all times.

“In the event that you hit something, you’re not going to have time to put a life jacket on after the event occurs," Johnson said.

Johnson says to tell people where you will be boating and what time you will be back.

He also recommends limiting alcohol consumption.
