State climate experts are now confirming what we already know. It rained A LOT last month. The Illinois State Climatologist Office says May was the third-wettest on record. It was also the sixth-consecutive month with above-average rainfall.

Preliminary average statewide precipitation during May was 8.64 inches, nearly four inches above the long-term average. The National Weather Service says the Peoria International Airport recorded 8.26 of rain last month. That’s nearly four inches more than typical May measurements.

The area stretching from Peoria west to Quincy and the Quad Cities was the wettest in the state. More than seven rain gauges in that region measured 13 inches or more of rainfall during May.
