Peoria Receives $300k for Environmental Cleanup

PEORIA -- The city of Peoria will receive $300,000 from the U.S. EPA to clean up contaminated sites on the near North Side.

The grants will target the Hawkey Rubber Manufacturing, Standard Oil Products and former Monroe Street Station sites for cleanup.

Sites near the Illinois River will be of particular focus.

“Peoria has recently enjoyed a surge in the re-use of properties in our heritage neighborhoods. This generous funding from the EPA will assist in the continued safe redevelopment of numerous older and underutilized properties,” Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis said in a press release.

The Brownfield Program grants were announced Wednesday by U.S. Senators Tammy Duckworth and Dick Durbin. The grants target properties where redevelopment is hindered by contamination or pollution.

Other communities covered by the more than $1.5 million in grants were awarded include Rockford, Waukegan, South Beloit and Rock Falls.
