The Archdiocese of New York has filed a new court motion in the ongoing battle over the remains of former Archbishop Fulton Sheen.
A New York court ruled last June that the Central Illinois-native’s remains can be moved to Peoria. The Archdiocese of New York has made numerous court filings over the past three years opposing the transfer. It’s newest filing comes just weeks after the New York Court of Appeals refused to overturn the lower court’s ruling.
Sheen’s family believes moving his remains to Peoria will improve his cause for sainthood. The Catholic Diocese of Peoria expressed regret with the latest developments in a written statement Monday. The Diocese of Peoria says the latest court filing delays the celebration of Sheen’s beatification within the 100th anniversary year of his ordaniment.
Sheen was known for his revolutionary radio and TV preaching in the 1950s and '60s.
