Sandbag cleanup is underway along Peoria’s riverfront. Public works crews began removal Wednesday in the 300 block of SW Water Street.
City officials say Water Street will remain closed to vehicular traffic between Liberty and Harrison streets until cleanup is complete. Water Street businesses and restaurants still have pedestrian access. Vehicles can enter the Liberty parking lot from Harrison Street.
The city of Peoria began sandbagging two weeks ago as heavy rains pushed the Illinois River out of its banks. Wednesday morning, the river level in Peoria was 25.3 feet. Flood stage is 18 feet. Forecasters expect the river to fall below 22 feet early next week.
