Large Section of Illinois River Closed to Recreation Traffic

Peoria Public Radio/Kristin McHugh

The Illinois River is closed to recreational traffic between Lacon and the Mississippi River due to flooding.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources announced the closure Sunday. It begins at the IL-17 bridge in Marshall County and continues southwest to Grafton.

IDNR Director Colleen Callahan says conditions are treacherous for boaters and emergency personnel who may be called for water rescues. Conservation police report dangerous currents and floating debris along a large swath of the Illinois River.

A flood warning remains in effect for much of the Illinois river until further notice. Sunday night, the river depth was 27.9 feet in Peoria. Flood stage is 18 feet. The river is expected to fall to 27.8 feet in Peoria by Tuesday morning.
