Work to protect the Peoria’s River Station from flood waters is nearly complete. Assistant Public Works Director Sie Maroon expects completion of the remaining sandbag walls Friday.
Public works crews are now using a parking lot under the Bob Michel bridge as an equipment and staging area. Maroon says the parking lot north of Martini’s is closed, and the Liberty Street parking lot is expected to close Saturday. He adds Water Street between Liberty and Harrison may also close depending on how high the flood water reaches.
The National Weather Service says the Illinois River in Peoria will crest at 28-feet by Monday morning. That’s higher than earlier predictions and officially makes the forecasted crest a major flooding event.
