Peoria Council Tables Plan to Bill for Some Accidents

City of Peoria

The city of Peoria will not ask motorists involved in traffic accidents to reimburse the city...at least not yet.

The city council last night tabled a proposal that would charge non-city residents involved in a vehicle accident. The plan would first bill the car owner’s insurance company. If that didn’t cover the cost of fire department services at an accident, then the car owner would be billed.

At-large council member Sid Ruckriegel says the idea is anti-business.

"I’m thinking of quite a few businesses that are located within the city limits of Peoria that have employees where they may be coming in from right outside city lines. That doesn’t send a really good message about where they want to locate. It’s one more thing that says we’re not open for business," says Ruckriegel.

The council voted to table the plan on an 11-0 vote.
