Opponents of Princeville Hog Operation Seek Greater Transparency

Peoria Public Radio/Kristin McHugh

Peoria County’s administrator wants state lawmakers to review statutes governing the construction of livestock facilities.

Scott Sorrel’s comments are in response to public complaints regarding a proposed hog facility near Princeville. Opponents say it poses health risks and is too close to the village.

The swine operation would house 2,480 hogs - 20 short of an Illinois law that requires a public meeting before construction.

Environmental groups voiced their concerns about the Princeville operation Thursday. Karen Hudson is with the Illinois Citizens for Clean Air and Water. She’s also a Peoria County farmer.

“We do not oppose livestock operations per say. But we just are asking for stronger regulations that would protect public health and rural communities in this state,” says Hudson.

Administrator Scott Sorrel says in a written statement that he supports greater transparency. He believes the State Water Survey should play a larger role in evaluating how proposed facilities would affect local groundwater supplies. Sorrel also says state agricultural officials should consider prohibiting new livestock operations within one-point-five miles of municipal boundaries.
