Peoria School Honors City's First Black Female Doctor

Kristin McHugh

Peoria Public Schools is honoring the city’s first, black female physician. Dr. Maude A. Sanders Primary School is the new name of the district’s facility along West Forrest Hills Avenue.

The name change was announced in a simple ceremony Wednesday. The school had been known as Woodrow Wilson primary school. Superintendent Sharon Desmoulin-Kherat says Dr. Sanders was a true humanitarian who can inspire future generations.

“Dr. Maude Sanders truly, truly represents the remarkable spirit that we strive (for) each and every day in Peoria Public Schools,” said Sharon Desmoulin-Kherat.

A temporary banner was unveiled seconds after district employees dismantled a portion of the old Woodrow Wilson school sign. Carol Graham - Dr. Sanders’ daughter - was overcome with emotion:

“This is far more than I could ever imagine - a school being named in honor of my mother. She would be so proud. Before she was a doctor, she was a teacher,” said Graham.

A lighted marquee will replace the temporary Dr. Maude A. Sanders Primary School banner. Additional signage is already updated. The school board approved the name change in June after some debate.
