A semi carrying a combine failed to make it under the overpass at Pinecrest Drive on Interstate 74 Monday evening. The semi was traveling eastbound about 6:30 when it struck the overpass. Debris from the combine struck the 2003 Ford pickup truck traveling behind the semi and flatbed.
The East Peoria man in the truck was transported to OSF Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
The eastbound I-74 area at Pinecrest Drive was closed for several hours last night as Illinois State Police and I-DOT needed to bring an inspector to evaluate the structural integrity of the overpass before the route was restored for normal traffic flow. That bridge inspector had to travel from a couple hours away. That accident is still under investigation by the Illinois State Police Crash Reconstruction Unit.
