Richwoods High School was a part of a national conversation on school violence Wednesday. Students participated in a sit-in, lining the hallways of the school.
They sat in silence for 17 minutes to honor the victims of the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. Participation was voluntary and it was supported by Richwoods School Principal Brett Elliott.
Elliott says that students approached him about the sit-in. “They came to us immediately after the tragedy, and just wanted to know how they could participate. So, I just think it’s important today to allow students to have a voice and really channel that in a positive way.”
Students and staff also wore orange shirts that said “See Something, Say Something.”
Morgan Lott is one of four students who helped organize the sit-in. She says that it was not meant to be a political statement. “We’re not trying to take sides. This is something that affects everyone. When that shooter went into Parkland, he wasn’t looking for a specific type of person.”
Elliott says Richwoods plans to continue the discussion on school violence with a forum in April.
