Peoria REACHes to Address Opioid Epidemic

The Peoria Recovery Project is planning a broad-based opioid awareness event in April at the Peoria Civic Center.

Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis says the goal of the group is to 'REACH a solution'. “The Acronym stands for Recovery, Education, Advocacy, Community, and Health.”

Ardis was one of many community leaders who joined in the announcement for the event. Others included the Peoria Police and Fire Chiefs, the Peoria County Sheriff, State's Attorney and Coroner and others.

The Peoria Recovery Project is being shepherded by Sharon Harkless. She lost one of her three children to an overdose 18 months ago and created a foundation called Cody’s Crusaders.

Harkless says the event will have something for everyone. "Families can attend for the education and prevention. Those who are struggling can find the help and support they need. Those who have been through treatment can attend and find valuable tools to help them stay on the path of recovery.”

Harkless says families struggling with grief can also find support at the event.

The Peoria Recovery Project is Saturday, April 21, 2018, from 9:00 to 4:00 at the Peoria Civic Center.

The event includes:

  • Keynote Speaker Tim Ryan of A & E’s Dope Man
  • Naloxone training and distribution
  • Prescription medication disposal
  • Job readiness resources
  • HIV screening
  • A variety of community resource groups and booths
