Park Board Approves Budget, Saves July Fireworks Display

Fireworks will remain as part of the Peoria Park District July third festivities.

But Detweiller Golf Course, Lakeview Aquatic Center and the clay tennis courts at Glen Oak Park will close down. The park district board made those changes in approving the 2018 district budget Wed.

The Glen Oak fireworks, which were eliminated in the original budget proposal, were restored on a unanimous vote. The park trustees did not add the $14,000 cost of the fireworks into the budget. Executive Director Emily Cahill says the park district instead will seek funding from new sources.

“So if there are opportunities for sponsorship dollars or other revenue generators that will support our activities, that’s one of the things we’ll spend the rest of winter and early spring investigating to see what our options are in order to raise those dollars.”

The closure of the golf course, aquatic center and clay tennis courts were made because of declining use of the facilities.

Park board trustees also voted to remove the current $100 differential so that all golfers pay the same amount, regardless of residency.

Supporters of the motion hope it attracts additional out-of-district golfers. The fee for seasonal passes varies by age. District staff will review the impact at the end of the next golf season.
