After several years of inactivity, the City of Peoria has re-established a litter committee. What was once called the Mayor’s Litter Commission now operates under the banner of Pick Up Peoria.

“Every Monday, we have this energized litter group. They’re meeting for lunchtime litter collection here at city hall,” City Communications Director Stacey Peterson said. “However, our volunteers are actually going out every week.”

Pick Up Peoria meets the first Monday of every month at noon at city hall to clean downtown city property and sidewalks. The group is also planning a new program called “Pick Up A Piece,” which encourages residents to pick up at least one piece of litter every day.

Peterson says the city also will ask neighborhood association leaders to share their thoughts on how best to keep the city litter free.
