Morton School District was the target of a cyber-attack Tues., allegedly linked to Russia.

In a news release, the school district says employees received an email falsely attributed to the superintendent, Lindsey Hall.

The email requested district employees’ W-2 information, including social security numbers.

The Morton Police Department says an investigation found the fraudulent email originated from Russia. Police Chief Craig Hilliard says emails like these are on the rise in both public and private sectors.

“We are working with the school district and other entities to try and get to the bottom of this, but things like this are very hard to trace back to foreign hackers," Hilliard said.

He added anyone who receives suspicious emails fishing for information should contact police.
