Fairview Firefighter and Soldier Killed in Kabul

Fairview firefighter and Army Sergeant Douglas Riney has died in Kabul, Afghanistan supporting Operation Freedom’s Sentinel.

The 26 year-old entered active-duty in July 2012. He was assigned to the Support Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas.

A statement from the Department of Defense says Riney and another Army civilian employee died Wednesday of wounds received during an encounter with hostile enemy forces.

Riney was deployed in Operation Enduring Freedom July 2014 to February last year. He deployed for Afghanistan in June.

His awards and decorations are lengthy and include a Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal and four Army Achievement Medals, in addition to the Purple Heart.
