Civic Organizer Runs for 5th District Peoria City Council Seat

Tanya Koonce

The Vice President of Diversity at ICC Rita Ali is running for the 5th District Peoria City Council Seat. Ali made the announcement at her home in North Peoria where most of the homes in her subdivision featured one of her Red and White Ali yard signs.

Ali says she will concentrate her efforts in the areas of Economic and job development, property taxes, safe neighborhoods and education. She says 5th district residents deserve strong representation from someone who lives in the district:

“Who will return their phone calls and listen to their concerns. Not give lip service but to actually act on what they hear. That person should be visible, conduct business in a professional and timely way and expect to be held accountable for progress.”

Ali has served in at least 20 civic organizations and currently chairs the Peoria Police and Community Advisory Committee.

Casey Johnson is the first term councilman who holds the seat. He moved to be in the 5th when the district maps were redrawn after the census, because his previous residence landed in the 4th district.

The municipal primary is February 28th and the general municipal election is April 4th.
