At-Large Peoria City Councilman Ryan Spain has announced his intention to resign his municipal seat. His announcement comes as it’s anticipated Councilman Spain will be sworn into the 73rd District Illinois House of Representatives seat January 11th.
Spain says announcing his intention to resign on November 18th allows more prospective candidates adequate time to collect petition signatures. “It’s not be to presumptuous about my election to the state legislatures, but rather to give voters an opportunity to weigh in and make a decision about who will serve on their behalf on the City Council.”
Spain’s at-large council seat expires May 2019. He is the only candidate on the November 8th ballot for the 73rd District Illinois House seat. Fellow Republican Dave Leitch has elected not to seek re-election after serving for 27-years.
Peoria Mayor Jim Ardis who is also seeking re-election in the Spring, says Spain has been very involved in municipal government during his decade on the council. He says because of his public service ethic, Spain has the capacity to also serve the community well in state Government.
