Seniors, Disabled Can Apply for Help With Heating Bills

A program offering help with winter heating bills is preparing to enroll seniors and people with disabilities.  Priority enrollment in the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, also known as liheapIllinois, begins Sept. 1 at 35 local agencies that administer the state-federal program.

The program offers assistance to low-income families by paying benefits directly to utility companies

A single person qualifies for help if their monthly income is $1,485 or less. A two-person household can qualify with a monthly income of up to $2,003.

Documentation such as proof of income is required to apply.  Families with young children ages 5 and younger can start applying for assistance starting Oct. 1. Others can begin applying Nov. 1.
