PEORIA, Ill. (AP) - A Peoria police officer has been found guilty of possession of child pornography.
Jurors took about three hours Thursday to convict 35-year-old John McCavitt of 15 counts of possession of child pornography. He is scheduled to be sentenced Aug. 25 and could be sent to prison for at least three years.
Evidence at the trial showed that McCavitt's home computer contained thousands of images of child pornography between April 2011 and July 2013, when it was seized by police in a sexual assault investigation.
McCavitt was acquitted on a sexual assault charge in 2014, but a police computer expert found the pornography during an internal investigation.
McCavitt has been on unpaid leave. His employment status was not immediately clear Thursday.
