The Caterpillar Visitors Center is offering a look at the life of its first chairman and the inventor of the Best 60 Tractor.

That became the Caterpillar 60, thought to be one of the most successful track type tractors in history.  C.L.‘Leo’ Best was the founder and president of C.L. Best Tractor Company that eventually merged with Holt, making Holt Best Tractor Company. That was the forerunner to Caterpillar.

Lee Fosberg is the Supervisor of Corporate Heritage Services at Caterpillar. He says they’ve colorized 25 of the photos throughout the display.

“Moving about the exhibit you’re going to realize the gentleman that kind of started this company was really no different than all of us. And the other thing that you’re going to learn is things that he invented are still relevant and will on the Caterpillar line today.”

This one of C.L. 'Leo' Best's hand sketches of his inventions on display at the Caterpillar Visitors Center. Best was the first chairman of Caterpillar and also the inventor of the Best 60 that became the Caterpillar 60.

Fosberg says that includes the undercarriage of the tractor or the tracks on down to the ground. The Leo Best Display at the Caterpillar Visitors Center is expected to be in place into the fall.
